The Gaikundo Factory was founded in 1978 and is located between Mount Kenya and the Abadare Mountains. This region has deep and fertile soil due to ash deposited over thousands of years by the now inactive Mount Kenya. The cooler climate of the region brings slower maturation of the coffee cherries which contributes to Gaikundo's complex acidity. Around 650 smallholder farmers deliver freshly picked coffee cherries to the Gaikundo Factory. Local people are paid to pick the ripe cherries between September and January.
